Whereas translating implies conveying an idea in writing, interpreting implies conveying it verbally. There are three interpreting modes:
Through an infrared-based technical system, the interpreter conveys simultaneously a message to an audience in one or more languages different from the speaker’s. This is the fastest and most efficient option, with a similar effect to dubbing.
In this case, the interpreter listens, writes notes and memorizes the speaker’s message in its original language. Afterwards, he or she conveys the message in the audience’s language. In general, consecutive interpreting is the option chosen whenever the use of technical equipment is not feasible.
This is the ideal interpreting mode whenever there are two participants only in a meeting, i.e. a press interview or a negotiation between two businesspeople. It does not require any technical equipment.
